How I Learned More Than I Bargained For.

Last year I decided to repurpose what would have been my commute time to throw myself into learning something totally new. All & all this seemed fair since semester after semester I have unquestioningly expected my students to limber up, strap in, and get ready to learn whatever I threw at them. The world of real estate has always interested me so thought to myself, “self - why not get a license”?

WOW. I learned so much more than what TRID, GRM, REIT, RESPA, and CCR stand for. Now I remember how painful rote memorization is. Now I know how frustrating an online exam is when your internet speed slows to a crawl for no reason. And now I know how truly creepy it is to be stared at by an invisible, unforgiving proctor for hours. It's been a long time since I felt this kind of kinship to my students. I’m not sure yet what I will do with the actual license, but one thing is for sure it has helped me be more empathetic AND sympathetic with my students – and that in itself is something to celebrate.
